Sweet Lady Jane
A local chain of dessert shops in the Greater Los Angeles area
Founded by Jane Lockhart. Operated by Ashley Lebowitz until the end of 2023.
Known for fancy cakes and for abruptly closing all six of their stores in January 2024 without notice to anyone, not even the store employees.
UPDATE: In March 2024, SLJ reopened under the new ownership of Julie Ngu, the chief executive officer of longstanding Pacific French Bakery.
Sweet Lady Jane, known for its triple berry cake, announced its sudden closure of all locations on social media Monday, stating that after 35 years, Dec. 31, 2023, was its final day of business. The post indicated its sales were not enough to pay its lease obligations and to pay employees a living wage in California.
A few employees also took to social media to say they were not informed of the closure and learned of their job loss from an Instagram post.
Stores are located in Beverly Hills, Encino, Manhattan Beach, Santa Monica, Calabasas, and West Hollywood.
Scheduled to open in Marina del Rey and Larchmont Village.
