June 2024 West Haven incident
“`
Arrest
On June 22, 2024, West Haven, Connecticut police responded to a beach near
Ocean Avenue and Dawson Avenue at approximately 2:30 a.m. after an officer
reported hearing screaming from the water.
Police identified the man as 41-year-old Romney Desronvil of Queens,
New York. Officers found him in the water with two young children.
Police reported that the children were approximately 100 yards offshore when
officers and West Shore Fire Department personnel intervened.
The children were brought to shore and transported to Yale New Haven Children’s
Hospital. Contemporary reports said both children were initially in critical
condition and subsequently improved.
Charges
Desronvil was charged with:
- Two counts of attempted murder / attempted homicide
- Two counts of risk of injury to a child
- Two reckless-endangerment-related charges, according to contemporaneous reporting
At his first court appearance, a judge ordered him held on
$2 million bail.
Desronvil pleaded not guilty at a subsequent court appearance.
These were criminal charges and allegations. An arrest or charge is not itself a
finding of guilt.

Police account of the incident
According to police accounts reported by multiple news organizations, the responding
officer saw Desronvil and the children in the water. Police said that when the officer
approached, Desronvil moved farther away from shore with the children and told officers
to stay back.
Officers then entered the water. Additional officers and members of the West Shore
Fire Department assisted in the rescue. The children were recovered and taken to
medical personnel.
Police characterized the conduct as an attempted drowning. That characterization is
properly attributed to law enforcement rather than presented here as an independent
finding of fact.
Children’s condition
The two children were hospitalized following the incident. Early reports described
them as being in critical condition and receiving lifesaving treatment.
Subsequent reporting stated that the children were improving, were no longer
intubated, and were later released from the hospital.
Statements attributed to Desronvil
Reports of the court proceedings stated that Desronvil told police he had taken the
children to the beach in the context of a troubled relationship with their mother.
Reports also stated that he told police he had found material he described as
“witchcraft” material belonging to the children’s mother.
These statements were reported as statements attributed to Desronvil in police/court
reporting. They are not presented as verified descriptions of the family’s circumstances.
