The diner is a project envisioned by Phil Rosenthal with help from Nancy Silverton. It is named after Rosenthal’s parents Max and Helen Rosenthal.

A patty melt is an American grilled sandwich that consists of a ground beef patty topped with melted Swiss cheese and caramelized onions, all sandwiched between two slices of griddled rye bread (often caraway-seeded). It is a cross between a cheeseburger and a grilled cheese sandwich, traditionally made without condiments, and known for its savory, slightly sweet flavor from the caramelized onions.
