Layer 8
CSUN club started in 2012 when two graduates from the CyberPatriot High School Cyber Security Competition got together to compete in the Western Regional Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (WRCCDC). Competing with a full team required attracting other security-oriented, like-minded people and paying for expenses and the only way to do that from an academic standpoint was to form an official club.
Layer 8 focused on teaching information security to students of all majors and aimed to arm students with defensive and offensive skills to prepare them for the real world. They offered a safe environment to discuss and practice skills that students wouldn’t be able to do legally and ethically.
They participated in many offensive Capture The Flag (CTF) competitions and attended local security conferences. Every semester, they would bring in professionals from the field of security to talk about their jobs and roles.
